Introduction
All India Engineering Entrance Examination also known as (AIEEE) is a common entrance examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. The AIEEE examination is conducted every year and all students who wish to apply for engineering or architecture courses should appear for this examination. All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is recognized as a qualifying examination by all engineering colleges and by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NITs).


All India Engineering Entrance Examination was first introduced in the year 2002 and the CBSE has been conducting it every year on the last Sunday of the month of April. The results for this examination will be announced by the end of May or by the first week of June. Students who appear for these exams will be graded on an all-India level and state level. Hence he or she will receive two AIEEE scores.

A Brief History of the AIEEE
Though AIEEE was introduced in 2008, the move to conduct a common entrance exam on an All-India level for professional courses was proposed in the Programme of Action (PoA), 1992 under the National Policy on Education (NPE). The AIEEE helped to standardize the various levels of admission standards and helps to maintain professional standards and also avoids overlap among various institutes.

AIEEE Eligibility
The eligibility criteria to appear for AIEEE is that the applicant should have passed Class XII or its equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks for General Category students and 40% for SC/ST/OBC/PH students.

How to Apply for AIEEE?

Online Submission
Students who wish to appear for the AIEEE exam can apply online at their official website: http://aieee.nic.in/aieee2011/aieee/welcome.html. You can fill in the application form and you have the option of paying the exam fees through Credit card or by Demand Draft. You will need to note the registration number and take a print out of the confirmation page to be sent to the CBSE office in Delhi by post. You will be required to paste your photograph, thumb impression and add your signature in the application form. You will need to keep a photocopy of the confirmation of the registration page and the online payment confirmation for further reference.

Postal Application
The application form for AIEEE can also procured through post by writing to the following address –

You can also get them from the regional offices of CBSE or from the list of designated branches of Banks and other institutions. If you are procuring the information bulletin and the application form by post, you will be required to attach a demand draft of Rs. 650 if you belong to OBC or General category and Rs. 350 if you belong to SC/ST category.

Whether you are applying through online or by post, read the instructions carefully before applying. Postal applicants need to go through the appendix V before sending in their application. Once you send in your application, the Board does not entertain any requests for change in particulars. Incomplete or overwritten applications forms will be rejected outright so be very careful while filling these forms.

The application form for AIEEE is normally available from third week of December to first week of January. You will be required to submit the form by the second week of January. Admit card will be sent to the students from mid-week to end of March. The exams are normally held during the last week of April and the results are declared during the first week of June. These are however tentative dates so to be on the safer side, it would be better to check their website – http://aieee.nic.in from to learn the precise dates.

The students are also given the option to take an online examination or through the regular paper and pen method. If you wish to take the online examination, you will be required to apply through their website http://aieee.nic.in. The pattern, structure and duration of online examinations is the same as regular exams but the Board allows only 5000 students to take up online exams on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Structure of the AIEEE
AIEEE has two papers with subjects such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in Paper 1 and Mathematics, Drawing and Aptitude in Paper 2. Both papers have objective type of questions and there will be four choices for each question from which the correct answer has to be selected. If you give an incorrect answer then, you will get a negative marking. So if you are not sure of the answer, it would be best not to answer the question at all!

Students aspiring for Engineering or B Tech courses will be required to take Paper 1 while those who wish to pursue Architecture (B Arch) or B Planning Courses will have to take up Paper 2. The duration of each paper is three hours and the students can opt for question papers in either English or Hindi language.

Students can apply and attempt AIEEE for three times consecutively after which they will not be allowed to appear.

How to Prepare for the AIEEE?
CBSE Board conducts the AIEEE exam you will need to study the CBSE syllabus for the examination. If you studied State Board or ICSE Board in your 12th standard, it would help to get NCERT books.

There are many coaching centers that offer study materials and books that can use to prepare for these exams.

Sample question papers and previous year’s question papers are also available in the AIEEE website. There are also many other websites that provide you with study materials and mock tests.

AIEEE Admit Card
The Board will send the Admit card to the students by post through Under Certificate of Posting (UPC) four weeks before the exams are conducted. Students who have applied online for these exams will also receive admit cards through post. Students who have not received the admit card, will need to write to the Board before the exams are conducted.

AIEEE Counseling and Admission
Students will receive their AIEEE score and rank by post during the first week of June. Candidates who have scored the required cut off mark will be called for counseling. Recently AIEEE counseling has become more easy thanks to Internet. You can register at www.ccb.nic.in and select the institute and course that you wish to study. You will be called for first round of counseling where you will have to produce your original documents and pay the initial fee.

Studying for an engineering course is not as easy as it was in the old days but there are many other resources available for students today than before.
