IITJEE: All You Need to Know About the IIT JEE, the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam

 
                            

Introduction
Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination also known as IITJEE or just JEE is the exam that you will have to crack, if you wish to study at the elite institute of IIT. Conducted every year, JEE is the qualifying exam and necessary criteria for admission in as many as seventeen colleges. Apart from all Indian Institute of Technology, the JEE is also considered as qualifying examination for new institutes such as Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. These are located at Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, Kolkata, and Bhopal. In addition, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology and Indian Maritime University also accept the IIT JEE.


Brief History of the IIT JEE
The Indian Institute of Technology is among of the most prestigious institutions in India ever since 1951 when the first IIT was established. The qualifying examination for IIT has been conducted for the past 45 years and its format has undergone many changes since its inception.

IIT JEE Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for IITJEE are that the OBC and GE students should pass their 12th standard or equivalent examination with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate. Students belonging to SC ST castes must secure at least 55% in their 12th standard examinations.

How to Apply to the IITs?
The application form for IITJEE is generally available from the third week of November to third week of December. However it would be best for students to check their official website (http://jee.iitm.ac.in/) earlier itself to know the latest dates.

IIT JEE Online Application
Students can apply for IITJEE online through their official website – http://jee.iitm.ac.in/ or by post. Applying online is faster and simpler than applying through post and online application forms are less expensive than the offline application forms. Payment for application can be done online through credit or debit cards. Instructions for filling the application form are given in their official website – http://jee.iitd.ac.in/instructions.php. Follow the instructions carefully while filling in the forms and then take a print out and send it across by speed post or registered post

IIT JEE Postal Application
You can also purchase the application form the examination from the following banks – http://jee.iitd.ac.in/forms.php. The application form for IITJEE is given in the Optical Machine Readable format so the students will fill out the form carefully without any smudges or scribbles. Read through the instructions carefully before filling in the form since incomplete or incorrect forms will be rejected. You will need to enclose the following documents while submitting your application form – Attested copy of your SSLC certificate for age proof, latest passport size photograph, attested copy of category certificate for SC/ST students. You will need to write your application number on all the certificates and documents that are enclosed with the application form.

IITJEE Pattern
Students appearing for IITJEE will have to tackle two objective type papers, each containing questions from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and an aptitude test. The syllabus for each subject is given in detail in the following links

The syllabus for the examination is drawn from topics covered by CBSE and ISC Board of Examination. Question papers will be available in both Hindi and English language. The student should select choice of language while applying for the examination.

How to Prepare for the IITJEE?
If your aim is to prepare for IITJEE, then you should have begun your preparation when are starting your 11th standard. That way, you will be familiar with the concepts and the topics of study and you will not get unduly stressed out during your 12th standard exams.

There are also many coaching classes that specifically conduct classes for students who wish to appear for IITJEE. There are also mock tests and question banks available online that can be used to prepare for the exams.

IIT Joint Entrance Exam Admit Card
Admit cards for the IITJEE exams will be sent for those students whose valid application forms have been accepted by the Board. Admit cards will contain the name of the Student, Application Number, Registration Number, Photograph, Signature, Date of Birth, Language, Category and the Address of the JEE center allocated for the student. IIT does not issue duplicate copies of Admit cards so make sure that you do not lose yours. The same admit card need to be produced during the counseling and admission so you will need to keep yours safe even after you finish your exams.

IIT JEE Timetable
The following are the tentative dates for IITJEE exams. Students are however advised to visit the official website (http://www.jee.iitb.ac.in) for exact information about the application form and subsequent dates.

Availability of the application forms in the official website starts from the third week November to third week of December. The last date for sending the application forms to IIT is third week of December. The IITJEE is normally held on the second week of April and the results are declared on the last week of May. Qualifying students can fill their choices online from last week of May to second week of June. Counseling will start for the students from the second week of June.

JEE Results
The results of IITJEE can be checked through their official website – http://www.jee.iitb.ac.in by inputting your application number or registration number.

IIT JEE Counseling and Admission
Qualifying students will be called for counseling and admission based on their AIR, category and rank and also depending on the choice of course submitted by the students.
Students will need to first register for online counseling here – http://www.jee.iitk.ac.in/JCOP. You will need to register here and pay the counseling fee online. After which, you can input the choice of courses that you wish to take up. The allocation of courses is however based on the All India Rank (AIR) procured by the student.

Next the students will need to send the application form for admission along with Medical reports, Mark Sheet and Caste Certificate for SC/ST students to the JEE Chairman of the Zonal IIT office from where they received the admit card. IIT normally conducts two rounds of course allotment and the results of the same can be checked through their website. After the course is allotted, you will be required to pay the registration fees.
