Introduction
Karnataka’s Common Entrance Test commonly known as the KCET exams is a competitive examination conducted by the state Government of Karnataka for admission into Medical, Engineering and Architecture courses. Held every year by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), the KCET can be written only by those students who live in Karnataka. Apart from Medical, Engineering and Architecture students can also try for admission in Dental, Naturopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy and Yoga after they crack the KCET exams.
History of the KCET
Karnataka State Government has been conducting the KCET examinations since the year 1984 for students who wish to seek admission in professional colleges. Since then, the examination has been conducted every year.
KCET Eligibility
Students who wish to crack the KCET competitive examination should have passed their 12th standard or any other equivalent examination that is recognized by the Government with following subjects — Physics, Mathematics with optional subjects — Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Computer Science/Electronics. The students should have also secured a minimum of 45% of marks in the optional subjects. Students belonging to SC/ST should have scored a minimum of 40% marks in aggregate in the optional subjects.
One of the main eligibility criteria for KCET examinations is that the mother tongue either one of the parents should be Kannada, Tulu or Kodava.
How to Apply for the KCET?
Students can buy Application forms for the KCET examination, from their own schools, by submitting a Demand Draft of Rs. 650 drawn in the name of The Executive Director, Karnataka Examinations Authority, Bangalore. Students belonging to SC/ST caste can however pay Rs.500. (Note: The amount is subject to change every year.)
Students residing outside Bangalore and in other towns of Karnataka can order the application form through Speed Post. A self-addressed envelope (25 cm x 30 cm) with a demand draft of Rs. 650 or Rs. 500 (SC/ST students) drawn in the favor of “The Executive Director, Karnataka Examinations Authority, Bangalore” should be along to the Karnataka Examination Authority. The students should clearly write “REQUEST FOR CET-(year) BROCHURE” on top of the cover when they send it by Speed Post.

The application forms are generally made available in the schools by first week of March and the last date of submission is normally the first week of April.
(Note: The dates of the late date of submission changes on a yearly basis. Hence it is advisable for the students to check with your school authorities in advance about the availability and the last date of submission)
Students can also periodically check the official website of KCET examination – http://kea.kar.nic.in/ where the application is also available online and last date of submission and other details are updated.
The students are also requested to take a photocopy of the application form for further reference.
KCET Exam Pattern
There will be two papers in this objective-type examination. Paper I is a combination of Physics and Chemistry for duration of 150 minutes and Paper II is for Mathematics where 60 questions will need to be answered in 80 minutes. Students who wish to apply for medical colleges will have to take Biology paper, which will have 60 questions to be answered in 80 minutes.
Each question is for one mark each however there is no negative marking for wrong answers.
The Answer Keys are generally published in the KEA official website – http://kea.kar.nic.in, seven days after the exams are conducted.
How to Prepare for the KCET?
The syllabus for the KCET examination is based on the 11th and 12th standard state syllabus set by Karnataka state.
Students can also go through the previous year’s question papers along with the answers uploaded in the official website of KCET — http://kea.kar.nic.in/qepaper.htm.
KCET Admit Card
Students who have submitted the application form KCET exams through their school will receive their admit cards through their school. Postal applicants will get their admit cards through Speed Post to the address that they furnished in the self-addressed envelope.
Students who have not received their admit card should immediately contact their respective School Principal or the KEA office with a photocopy of the application form.
Important Dates and Schedule for the KCET
During the first week of March, the KCET application forms are available for sale. The last date of submission of the completed application forms is first week of April. The examination is normally held during the third week of April. The results of the KCET examination are normally published by the end of May in their official website – http://kea.kar.nic.in. Following which, the rank list will be updated in the official website.
These are however tentative dates, hence it is recommended that the students periodically check the official website for updates.
Admission and Counseling for the KCET
The admission and counseling process begins normally in the last week of June or first week of July. The counseling for engineering students begins in the second week of September. (Note: Please check the exact dates of admission and counseling in the official website – http://kea.kar.nic.in.
The State Government as per the reservation policy follows the admission for engineering courses
- 100% seats are reserved in Government colleges (Seats are allocated as per the student’s KCET 2011 score)
- 95% seats for students are reserved in Aided colleges (Allocation is based on the KCET 2011 score of the student)
- 50% seats are reserved in Private Un-Aided colleges for Non-Minority students (Allocation is based on KCET 2011 score)
- 45% seats for students are reserved in Private Un-Aided colleges for Minority students (Allocation of seats are based on KCET 2011 score of the student).
